I can happily say that since playing a show we presented back in January of this year, The Spooks, not ones to rest on their laurels, have only crafted an even more full, vibrant sound. The Spooks played a show for us at Rubber Gloves with Wild Harem, so impressive was the bands ability to drink like sailors and yet when they were on stage they played like an act well beyond their years. The band is back with this swinging-fuzztoned hit straight out of Link Wray’s dreams, a band absolutely at the top of their brand of sound. Certainly you’ll be looking forward to their future LP on Trig Club–certainly you’ll be looking forward to their show with Fergus & Geronimo and Uptown Bums at Rubber Gloves on August 4th.

Denton is still in my opinion one of the gems of Texas, though many people will disagree, I think they may hold it to an unreachable standard. Nonetheless the music out of this city is incomparably eclectic and dense with talent. Keeping to this ideal Texas’ own Play Pinball! Records, who you may know for putting out the Fungi Girls LP, have recently released a compilation honoring this city’s musical virtuosity. The comp titled Denton Denton USA! features medley of bands formed in the town; the comp includes cuts from Uptown Bums, Video, Bad Sports, The Secret Bangs, Wax Museums a “secret track” and unreleased tracks from Teenage Cool Kids and Fergus & Geronimo, check out the tracklisting below. You can purchase this vinyl in the limited “Lone Star Blue” or black here and on top of the F&G song below there are five more tracks up at the Play Pinball! myspace. The Fergus & Geronimo track ”I May Be Poor” is a semi-exclusive track that you’ll only find at WTD or the vinyl of course (well, until Pitchfork gets ahold of it) and features the unique vocal stylings of Jason from F&G rather than Andrew. The track contains one of the stickiest riffs Ive heard in awhile and definitely adheres to the comp’s shibboleth of “the sound of rock and Shiner Bock“.

My friend Austin (person) who always has my musical ear, sent over a demo from the band Wild Harem out of Austin (the city) which currently has me flabbergasted. The band was formerly known as Some Others and is relatively green in the Austin music scene. I actually happened upon them at a Halloween house show they played with Denton garage greats Uptown Bums and was impressed by the cramped living room performance complete with a dangling chandelier over the lead singers head. Wild Harem has 6 songs up on their myspace but this “Golden Man” demo below is as fresh as Thanksgiving pumpkin pie with a chorus that’s undeniably as delicious; fortunately for you, WTD is the only place you will find it.

I’ve loved all the great garage bands to come out of the area in the last few years, namely Denton ; Wax Museums, Uptown Bums, Bad Sports, etc… Here is a band from the far-off Minneapolis scene, a two-piece band known as Birthday Suits shred loud, fast, and high-strung songs that last about 2 minutes – no more, no less. What catches my interest is how close the vocal harmonies are for such a fast-paced band, I mean sure its easy for the Raveonettes to pull that off playing slow indie pop, but I digress. Recently Birthday Suits put out a great split 7 inch with the legendary locals Marked Men through Nice & Neat Records entitled 7 Inches For Your Ex, below a wonderful sample is presented to you in all its 2 minutes of glory.

Anyone in the metroplex area that can make it to Denton Wednesday night will not be sorry. A house show featuring Woven Bones (early weeklytapedeck write up), Uptown Bums, and Bad Sports is happening and will surely be a good time. I will be out with my deteriorating video skills in hopes of bringing our first live performance to the ‘deck. If you do make it out, please bring money for Woven Bones who are making the trip up from Austin. Also a new track from them as of yesterday via RCRDLBL
called “Your Sorcery.” (I couldn’t get their widget to work…apologies)
