standard fare//fifteen

Standard Fare have been on the WTD radar for a bit, and on the 11th of January they will be releasing a new single 7-inch in blue vinyl through Thee SPC. The band its a traditional twee band that isn’t trite with overused riffs, but rather jumpy mint riffs that dont stray far from early Johnny Marr. Standard Fare will be coming through the US from the Northeast and down through the great States into SXSW territory. So support these gents (and lady) as they make their first tour through the New World. You can pre-order the new 7-inch here.

This band will no doubt receive comparisons to Joanna Newsom, for example: the singers voice is very close to Newsoms yet it is frankly, more bearable for for albums-length of tracks, secondly the singer, Rebecca Redman, does in fact play the harp. The differences is that Watercolor Paintings is a brothers/sister duo and takes much more influence from 90s twee folk bands and less from hippie culture. Watercolor Paintings full-length is currently somewhat hard to get ahold of but you can purchase their 7-inches here and here.

It’s amazing when a band like The Pains of Being Pure At Heart essentially resurrect a genre (twee) and bring it back into the limelight after it had so long rested on the like of Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura, and its not surprising that other twee ands trying to make it will no doubt get more attention. Brilliant Colors are one of these bands, and coincidentally are signed to the same label, Slumberland, as TPOBPAH. Brilliant Colors is a female trio that adheres more to the traditional twee sound of lo-fi, single guitar and soft female vocals. I honestly can say I feel like I am in the mid 90s when I listen to this band; which I dont have to tell you is a very enjoyable experience. “Motherland” comes from their debut Introducing which comes out November 3rd and can be ordered (at some point soon) through the Slumberland store.

Strangely, I have no idea how I came across Standard Fare but I am quite sure I like them. Jangly guitars and silky smooth female vocals that could only come from Stuart Murdoch’s long-lost sister; Standard Fare take influences from C86 bands and twee pop from the 90s to compose fresh, bouncy arrangements. The three-piece hails from Sheffield, England and have recently put out their debut single on Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation as a split 7-inch single with Slow Down Tallahassee, another local Sheffield act. You will have a hard time finding any music from this band next to what is on their Myspace and the 7-inch, but I recommend both as you will be able to hear their outstanding single “Dancing”.
