teenage cool kids//kachina doll

Denton heroes Teenage Cool Kids, in the wake of their fantastic Foreign Lands LP, have been on the recording grind ever since.  Their upcoming album proper, Denton After Sunset, still showcases their power-pop guitar driven identity but even shines on a side of early Silver Jews Americana.   “Kachina Doll” and “Landlocked State” are both tracklisted on this album and equally portray the new sound that TCK are beginning to show.  We hope to see this announced on an official roster sometime soon but, in the mean time, I highly recommend checking these out.

play pinball! records//denton denton usa! comp//fergus & geronimo

Denton is still in my opinion one of the gems of Texas, though many people will disagree, I think they may hold it to an unreachable standard. Nonetheless the music out of this city is incomparably eclectic and dense with talent. Keeping to this ideal Texas’ own Play Pinball! Records, who you may know for putting out the Fungi Girls LP, have recently released a compilation honoring this city’s musical virtuosity. The comp titled Denton Denton USA! features medley of bands formed in the town; the comp includes cuts from Uptown Bums, Video, Bad Sports, The Secret Bangs, Wax Museums a “secret track” and unreleased tracks from Teenage Cool Kids and Fergus & Geronimo, check out the tracklisting below. You can purchase this vinyl in the limited “Lone Star Blue” or black here and on top of the F&G song below there are five more tracks up at the Play Pinball! myspace. The Fergus & Geronimo track  ”I May Be Poor” is a semi-exclusive track that you’ll only find at WTD or the vinyl of course (well, until Pitchfork gets ahold of it) and features the unique vocal stylings of Jason from F&G rather than Andrew. The track contains one of the stickiest riffs Ive heard in awhile and definitely adheres to the comp’s shibboleth of “the sound of rock and Shiner Bock“.

Fergus & Geronimo – I May Be Poor

Tracklisting:
Teenage Cool Kids – Slave/Master
The Uptown Bums – Throw Your Money Away
The Pumpers – Shut Down
Wiccans – Endgame
Chief Death Rage – Riff Craft
The Secret Bangs – Violent Love
The Wax Museums – Billy’s Room
The Influence – Rambunctious Nosferatu
Bad Sports – Your Timin’ Just Ain’t Right
Fergus and Geronimo – I May Be Poor
Fungi Girls – Thanks For Following Love
Video – Bookstore
Bleach Boys – Lazer Jam
The Teenage Bees – I’m So Down
“Secret Track”

thomas function//magic city

Thomas Function is certainly not a new band, but they first time I heard of them was almost exactly a year ago when they came through Denton and played a house show with Denton’s own Wax Musuems and Teenage Cool Kids. Flash forward a year and coincidentally enough I was having a conversation about this band at our show last week which naturally steered towards a description of their sound and the only band that could be manifested in comparison was Velvet Underground. I’ll expand on that by saying the band has a very strong influence from the southern-hometown-rock genre: Neil Young and more recently Deer Tick. This record, In The Valley Of Sickness, was released on Tuesday and is available in CD or LP format through the always wonderful Fat Possum Records.

reading rainbow//mystical participation

The missing resin caper has been solved and Reading Rainbow’s LP was finally pressed onto vinyl about a month later than intended.    Upon arrival, Mystical Participation will spend more than it’s fair share of time with my phono.  Also note that their record release party will be a thousand miles away from me in their hometown, Philly, at Kung Fu Necktie on the 21st. I actually saw RR last July at a house show in Denton with Teenage Cool Kids and Fungi Girls (who’s debut LP is available for pre-order) and had a blast.  If you’re in the area, stop by and show them some love.  Order the LP here.

[video premier] teenage cool kids//foreign lands

Local dudes Teenage Cool Kids, already on their month + long romp through the states, rolled through the Mission District in San Fran and recorded a private session for the guys at the Different Fur Studios. Our friends at Yours Truly always do an exceptional job recording and have shot the best footage of TCK yet.  So here it is, check out the video debut of Teenage Cool Kids performing “Foreign Lands” from their latest LP, yeah, Foreign Lands.

Wednesday, August 12

Clipse / The Cool Kids @ Granada Theater

THIS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

No word yet on the reason for the cancellation of the best hip-hop lineup to hit Dallas in some time. Even better lineup than last week’s Wu-heavy show. No Jewish Pyrex. No bringing ‘88 back.

Bowerbirds / Megafaun / Matthew Gray, Delves Into The Humanity Pools @ Hailey’s

Go to this show instead. Bowerbirds and Megafaun each have gorgeous new records that should sound fantastic at Hailey’s. Local boy Matthew Gray’s new moniker/side project isn’t much of a departure from the Arrogant Sea (not a bad thing), but I’m really digging the slightly murkier sound of the new recordings.

Thursday, August 13

Smith Westerns / Girls / Teenage Cool Kids / Fergus & Geronimo @ Mable Peabody’s

Nate already mentioned this show (scroll down). Two of my favorite Denton bands playing with two of the best new bands anywhere. If you’re in Denton, you must go.

Saturday, August 15

Los Campesinos! / Girls / Smith Westerns @ Granada Theater

Nate has also already mentioned this show. If you want to go (you should), and if you haven’t entered already (you should have), then enter now for free tickets before it’s too late. This lineup is ridiculous. You are an absolute fool to miss this show. Thank you, Granada. WTD loves you.

[video] girls//lust for life

About a day behind on this, but check out this new video for Girls‘ “Lust For Life”.  Only a matter of time before Chris Owens and Co. are on stage in our area.  As before mentioned, we’ve got two pairs of tickets to hand out for Saturday’s show at the Granada (winners picked on Wednesday).  Also, they will be in Denton just a few days before with Smith Westerns, Fergus and Geronimo, and Teenage Cool Kids at Mable Peabody’s.  Check out one, or both.  Either way, good times will be had.  In addition, here’s a mini-playlist of some of our favorite tracks from the other bands that are set to play.

Los Campesinos! – We Are All Accelerated Readers
Teenage Cool Kids – Foreign Lands
The Smith Westerns – Give Me Some Time
Fergus and Geronimo – Harder Than It’s Ever Been

teenage cool kids//foreign lands

tck_foreign

Just last week I was in attendance for the Teenage Cool Kids record release show for their latest lp, Foreign Lands, at Rubber Gloves in Denton (actually the real album cover is much cooler, I just couldn’t find one that was big enough).  Released by Protagonist Music on super sturdy 180 gram vinyl, TCK are about to take over the world on a rediculous 3 month tour.  First, romping through the upper 48 before they head over seas (apparantly these guys are huge in the UK).  While in the states, Andrew Savage will also be touring with his other project, Fergus and Geronimo.  Make sure to catch their last local show for a while as they hit up a house venue in Denton, The Majestic Dwelling of Doom (muahaha!), on Aug. 3rd.  Youngsters the Fungi Girls will also be playing this show.

upcoming//july 4th weekend

surface of sun

Living in Dallas is like living on the surface of the sun. This place is not fit for human habitation. Especially if you’re blue-eyed and pasty-skinned like me. I’ve always found the Fourth of July to be an overrated holiday. There’s a built-in obligation to be outside. I love my country and all, but I want no part of the heat. Even after the sun goes down, beers get warm too fast to provide any relief. Fireworks are exciting, sure. Up north. Here, they’re best viewed on a wall-mounted Samsung while basking in glorious central a/c. I say fuck the fireworks. Go to a show.

Friday, July 3

Teenage Cool Kids / Angry Businessmen / Fungi Girls @ Rubber Gloves

Three of Denton’s finest. Teenage Cool Kids are celebrating their Foreign Lands record release. Angry Businessmen are apparently reuniting. Fungi Girls are… rad.

Saturday, July 4

INDENTONDANCE DAY: Neon Indian / many others… @ Hailey’s

Diverse lineup of DJs and bands. Doors at 6pm. Free until 9pm. They say, “you got yer rap, yer electronic, yer foot stompin music, yer chiptunes, and yer sikk djs.” Alan Palomo aka VEGA aka Ghosthustler is making his live debut as Neon Indian. Dude gets better with every name change. If that’s not enough, they’ll be “giving away free POP POP SNAPPERS and POP ICE POPSICLES all night!”

Western Giants / Touching Tongues / Manned Missiles / Violent Still Life @ The Cavern

All local bands. My esteemed colleague Nate has blabbed about his love of Western Giants. I share his love. The other bands on the bill are new to me, but based on their MySpace pages, I’m intrigued enough to get there early.

4th of July Blowout: Riverboat Gamblers / Red City Radio / Bad Sports / The Uptown Bums @ Rubber Gloves

Punk seems to be the uniting thread for this lineup. Riverboat Gamblers have notoriously riotous live shows. Another chance to catch Bad Sports, who Nic has photographed and spoken kindly of.
