upcoming//tonight: low

LOW

Low is playing Dallas tonight! And we get an interview!!

Slow start to the week of live music in DFW, with the exception of the always amazing Abe Vigoda at The Cavern last night. I hope someone went. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it. I’ve seen Abe Vigoda at least three times, and not only do they put on a fantastic show, they’re also super nice guys. The very promising Seattle art-punk trio Talbot Tagora, who I’ve never seen live, opened the show. Their upcoming album Lessons in the Woods or a City, is out July 21 on Hardly Art. As for the rest of the week…

Thursday, July 9

Low @ The Loft

Minimalist. Slow tempo. Beautiful two-part harmonies. Shut up and listen. And for fuck sake, stop calling them slowcore.

Friday, July 10

Deer Tick @ Hailey’s

Raw. Rootsy. Rock.

Strange Boys / The Coathangers / Bad Sports @ The Lounge on Elm Street

Watch out. The Coathangers girls spit. A lot.

The Paper Chase / Matthew and the Arrogant Sea @ Dan’s Silver Leaf

Two local bands. Denton’s own Matthew and the Arrogant Sea have a new record called Family, Family, Family Meets the Magic Christian out on Nova Posta Vinyl October 28.

Saturday, July 11

Matt & Kim @ House of Blues Dallas (Cambridge Room)

This was supposed to be a free Bacardi show with Major Lazer. Don’t know what happened. Very cool of Matt & Kim that they’re still coming to Dallas. You won’t see two happier people on stage. Such a fun show!

mika miko, strange boys, bad sports//live @ rgrs denton, tx [6/5/09]

Killer show last night in Denton at Rubber Gloves with Mika Miko, Strange Boys, and Bad Sports.  Picked up a cassette tape from BS and jammed that on the way home even though my ears were ringing non-stop.  The guys from Denton made a lot of new fans last night from the small, but appreciative crowd.  Strange Boys delivered a stellar set that was a good change in pace juxtaposed with the headliners,  Mika Miko.  They absolutely blew me away in terms of energy and the ability to galvanize an audience.  Reminded me of some hybrid of Pylon/Go-Go’s.

[vide0] bad sports//all the time

Just noticed these guys were added to the bill on Friday night’s show in Denton at Rubber Gloves. Bad Sports will be joining as the opener for the Strange Boys and Mika Miko. The tunes are straight punk and found me scrambling to get the 7″ here on Boom Chick Records. I’m hoping there will be some at the show for purchase as it looks like these guys are pretty low on the radar as of now. The exposure associated with their upcoming show should prove beneficial to this burgeoning band. Classic, simple lyrics are placed alongside an unforgiving pace that is sure to make you wish there were more than five songs to be heard on their site.  I was already pumped for this show Friday and now I’m definitely ready for this one!

upcoming in june [week 1]

According to my iPhone calendar, June is going to be a busy month for DFW live-music-fans. Nearly every day of June has a dot in its box, each dot representing at least one show that I deem calendar-worthy, which means that I’m going to need a new job and, by July, a new liver. We will keep you updated throughout the month on the live shows that we give our WTD stamp of approval. To kick us off, the first week of June is fucking monumental. Stare in awe below.

6/1 Mr. Lif @ The Loft

up-mrlif3

Ok, so I admit that this isn’t the most impressive show to start the week, but come on, hip-hop shows at The Loft are always a good time. Don’t forget to bring your own blunt. I don’t want to have to share mine with everyone. If you can’t make it, you can always watch Conan’s debut on the Tonight Show where you can also play guess-the-mumbled-lyric with Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. Not hating. By the way, I’ve still got my flannels.

6/2 Passion Pit / Harlem Shakes @ Granada /// 6/2 Japandroids @ The Cavern

passionpit500

Fuck you, scheduling gods. I don’t know who let this happen, but I want to throw peanut m&m’s at their Adam’s apples. I guess you could try to squeeze both shows in, but that seems unlikely. I might have to give the edge to Passion Pit, just because the chances of my getting laid are much higher. [audible boos from the crowd] I know, I know, some people don’t like Passion Pit. (I’m looking at you, Jarvis. Hey, why don’t you just repeat Angela over and over again, that’s a way better song.) But those people suck.

6/3 Black Moth Super Rainbow / School Of Seven Bells @ Hailey’s /// 6/3 New York Dolls @ House Of Blues Dallas

This one is easy, especially if you’re already in Denton, which I’m not. The drive from Dallas should be well worth it, though, for BMSR alone. I hope Tobacco does the Pan’s Labyrinth hand eye thing. That never gets old. If you are stuck in Dallas, pull out the platforms and eyeliner and get your glam on.

6/4 Animal Collective / Black Dice @ House Of Blues Dallas /// 6/4 Au Revoir Simone / The Antlers @ The Cavern

anco

If you don’t already have a ticket to Animal Collective, kill yourself. Or buy one now, because they’re still on sale. Wait, they’re SOLD OUT!! If both of those options fail, you could do a lot worse than the show at The Cavern. On any other night, I’d be there with bells on.

6/5 Mika Miko / Strange Boys @ Rubber Gloves /// 6/5 The Helio Sequence @ The Loft

strangeboys

Once again, if you can make it to Denton, this one’s a no-brainer. If not, you’ll probably be much less likely to get pissed or vomited on at The Helio Sequence. Either way, fun shall be had by all.

6/6 Bonnie “Prince” Billy @ Granada /// 6/6 The Theater Fire @ The Lounge on Elm Street

bpb

I’m a huge Will Oldham fan. I don’t care what name he goes by, I love it all. Dude can even act. Never seen him live. Not sure what to expect. Must go.

6/7 REST

If you survived week one, give yourself a day off. You’ll need your rest for week two.

strange boys will get theirs

the-strange-boys

Ryan Sambol of The Strange Boys has such a familiar voice, and I hate to say the name Caleb Followil (Kings of Leon).  While his effortless delivery may show similarities, that is the only parallel that is evident.  KOL likes to sing about pre-pubescent/cradle robbing sex, trouble keeping it up, and picking out clothes for their next GQ photo shoot.  Not at all the case for The Strange Boys.  Simply fundamental, their latest album, …And Girls Club, is garage rock to the very core.  Bluesy guitar riffs and none of that fancy remastering bullshit, this is an album that is designed to own on vinyl (what are you waiting for?).  The Strange Boys are about to embark on an epic tour (check their myspace for a full listing), covering 20 states in just over a month, and will be coming through Dallas twice. Their LP is available here [via In The Red Records].
