Here is the new video for “Violet Eyes” from our buddies in My Gold Mask; conceptually the video pairs well with the abrasive nature of the song. I can’t wait to see this band live again.

Today (Thursday) at 4 PM CST I (Ryan) continue our new time slot with a solo run as Nate was out of commission this week. So I took this opportunity to play what I love the best–twee and power pop. Of course thats not all, I sprinkled in the new stuff as always, new cuts from Fiveng, Grouper, Truman Peyote and Active Child brings the drone and dance to this party. Our favorite shorties My Gold Mask are self-releasing a torching new EP titled A Thousand Voices. The opening track “Violet Eyes” is a song we actually heard when they came through and we presented their show at RGRS, we knew this track would translate well when it was recorded and we couldn’t have been more right. Pulsating and rhythmic–Jacks unique guitar riffs accompanied with the almost carnal vocals of Gretta, these blend together to make a truly euphonious experience. You can purchase the EP here and ‘name your price’ or get the baby in cd-digipack form, I suggest the latter for various reasons.

Weekly Tape Deck is very proud to announce our first showcase, brace yourself because its a doozy. The show will take place October 10th at everyone’s favorite Denton, Texas venue: Rubber Gloves. The show will be headlined by the beautifully talented Bosque Brown, whose album Baby has been lovin’ on my speakers since it was released in March of this year. Bosque Brown is a pseudonym for the soulful Mara Lee Miller whose élan vital is her hauntingly beautiful voice; perhaps best described as one Flannery O’ Connor crooning Cat Power songs. We are also very lucky to have the talents of My Gold Mask playing the show, as they will be on tour burning up the Midwest as the dog days of Summer take a backseat for the one-dog nights of fall. The MGM duo of Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo have been on WTD’s radar for a bit and we are elated to see them live; you should be as well. Local act This Old House rounds up our first showcase, this band is part of the every-growing music scene in Denton and paints palette’s of hazy skies with their brand of what sounds to be minimalist Robin Guthrie-inspired pop songs with a dash of Americana for some sweetness. So there you have it folks, our very first showcase….you say you’re not convinced yet? Well take a listen to the tracks below and that might change your tone.

Been a while since we’ve talked about these guys, but My Gold Mask are back to recording. In the process of another ep, they sent over this cover of Jackie Deshannon’s “Bette Davis Eyes” (you’re probably more familiar with the Kim Carnes version). In other MGM news, we’ve confirmed a date at Rubber Gloves in Denton with local favorites This Old House on October 10th. We’ll have more on that when it gets closer to the date.

A recent recommendation from the Pasta Primavera guys, and it’s been on repeat all weekend. My Gold Mask are the duo of Gretta Rochella and Jack Armondo out of Chicago. People are quick to pull the Karen O (YYYs) and Alison Mosshart (The Kills) parallels. I get it, but I feel a stronger Ella Fitzgerald vibe from Rochella’s beautiful vibrato. Well, Fitzgerald that just mainlined reverb. Dark, dreamy soundscapes are bewitchingly painted as Armondo and Rochella are so complementary together. By the way, they are reaaaally cool and easy to contact! Get their latest LP on cassette or mp3 style.
