Normally I track the weekly mixtape with newer, “more current”, songs but I had to throw in an old N.W.A. classic to express my frustration for the speeding ticket I got on the way home today. You got it, Fu** tha Police! People have places to go, and I guess traffic patrol helps to make you late for whatever that place may be. Other than that, there have been some great releases this past week that you all might enjoy (including a sweet mashup from The Hood Internet). The tunes from Australian Angus Stone’s Lady of the Sunshine offer up some of the normal themes of a solo album: revenge, suicide, and love. The package these themes are delivered in sets it apart from anything I’ve heard lately though. Gentle, melancholic songs mesh with hard, bluesy stoner rock. It’s hard to put a label on Smoking Gun as an album either way though. It would be a disservice to categorize it at all, except that upon a listening you know it is good. Really good. If I had to pick a slightly similar artist I might say Black Keys with softer songs mixed in. Toting a guitar sound that has been sorely missed with his unique voice, this is undoubtedly rock at its core. This is not to say there aren’t moments of cliche involved, but overall a worthy listen. I’ll let you, the listener, decide what you think with a full album preview. Out now.
