If the title of their LP isn’t a dead give away, Christmas Island’s In The Red release is riddled with oxymorons. Not that I’m claiming to be the first to point this out, but while the warm guitar licks are forcing cheesed out grins Brian’s solemn words will only leave you heartbroken. However, it’s the contradiction between the two that hit home the most. We’ve all been crushed, but there’s always something we can find to smile about. Twinged with UK invasion post-punk and 60s surf-pop, it makes perfect sense for them to play with The Raincoats (so lucky!) amongst many others at the Part Time Punks Festival in San Diego. Blackout Summer was just released yesterday and at, just over a half hour, is well worth a lonely afternoon. Well, any afternoon really. Buy some DRM joints on iTunes or in vinyl format.
