Two perfect summer jams were just sent over later last night from the righteous Fungi Girls. Yeah it’s spring now, but both “Turquoise Hotel” and “Owsley Knows” are both a-sides for their Hozac and Group Tightener 7″s which are set for a mid-Summer release date. Both of these tracks show some serious maturity in these dude’s sound, but what’s most impressive to me is the minimal approach they took in “Owsley Knows”. Really love to see these guys (not girls) moving in such a positive direction.

Just a reminder that everyone’s favorite Cleburne High Schoolers’ LP will soon hit the shelves. Fungi Girls debut LP, Seafaring Pyramids, is the same slice of carefree garage pop that we all have grown to love. Actually, the dudes have just put up the entire album for freeload. But that shit is just for yr ipod. How about checking out Play Pinball! Records where you can purchase a tangible music relic and get a rad T along the way.

The missing resin caper has been solved and Reading Rainbow’s LP was finally pressed onto vinyl about a month later than intended. Upon arrival, Mystical Participation will spend more than it’s fair share of time with my phono. Also note that their record release party will be a thousand miles away from me in their hometown, Philly, at Kung Fu Necktie on the 21st. I actually saw RR last July at a house show in Denton with Teenage Cool Kids and Fungi Girls (who’s debut LP is available for pre-order) and had a blast. If you’re in the area, stop by and show them some love. Order the LP here.

Just last week I was in attendance for the Teenage Cool Kids record release show for their latest lp, Foreign Lands, at Rubber Gloves in Denton (actually the real album cover is much cooler, I just couldn’t find one that was big enough). Released by Protagonist Music on super sturdy 180 gram vinyl, TCK are about to take over the world on a rediculous 3 month tour. First, romping through the upper 48 before they head over seas (apparantly these guys are huge in the UK). While in the states, Andrew Savage will also be touring with his other project, Fergus and Geronimo. Make sure to catch their last local show for a while as they hit up a house venue in Denton, The Majestic Dwelling of Doom (muahaha!), on Aug. 3rd. Youngsters the Fungi Girls will also be playing this show.

Living in Dallas is like living on the surface of the sun. This place is not fit for human habitation. Especially if you’re blue-eyed and pasty-skinned like me. I’ve always found the Fourth of July to be an overrated holiday. There’s a built-in obligation to be outside. I love my country and all, but I want no part of the heat. Even after the sun goes down, beers get warm too fast to provide any relief. Fireworks are exciting, sure. Up north. Here, they’re best viewed on a wall-mounted Samsung while basking in glorious central a/c. I say fuck the fireworks. Go to a show.

Teenage Cool Kids / Angry Businessmen / Fungi Girls @ Rubber Gloves
Three of Denton’s finest. Teenage Cool Kids are celebrating their Foreign Lands record release. Angry Businessmen are apparently reuniting. Fungi Girls are… rad.
Saturday, July 4
INDENTONDANCE DAY: Neon Indian / many others… @ Hailey’s
Diverse lineup of DJs and bands. Doors at 6pm. Free until 9pm. They say, “you got yer rap, yer electronic, yer foot stompin music, yer chiptunes, and yer sikk djs.” Alan Palomo aka VEGA aka Ghosthustler is making his live debut as Neon Indian. Dude gets better with every name change. If that’s not enough, they’ll be “giving away free POP POP SNAPPERS and POP ICE POPSICLES all night!”
Western Giants / Touching Tongues / Manned Missiles / Violent Still Life @ The Cavern
All local bands. My esteemed colleague Nate has blabbed about his love of Western Giants. I share his love. The other bands on the bill are new to me, but based on their MySpace pages, I’m intrigued enough to get there early.
4th of July Blowout: Riverboat Gamblers / Red City Radio / Bad Sports / The Uptown Bums @ Rubber Gloves
Punk seems to be the uniting thread for this lineup. Riverboat Gamblers have notoriously riotous live shows. Another chance to catch Bad Sports, who Nic has photographed and spoken kindly of.
