It’s been a while since I’ve lost sleep in anticipation of Christmas Day goodies. As a kid, thoughts of the Transformers Dinobots and Legos were usually the culprit. This year: The Underwater Peoples Winter Review. Seriously, I ran to the computer and downloaded this before I even took a glimpse at any wrapped boxes. After some quality headphone time, we would like to share this awesome compilation over airwaves (um, internet airwaves) from cover to cover. Since our episodes are 16 tracks long (the comp being only 15), we thought it fitting to lead off with MJ’s “Human Nature”. Head to Indie-Verse for the broadcast and, when you’re done, download the entire thing free (for a limited time) at Chocolate Bobka’s.

Underwater Peoples is on a roll with their latest signings; Frat Dad is a perfect example of this good fortune. Coming from the same magical land as “The Boss,” this duo manifests a psychedelic cacophony of melodies that invite you to sing-a-long in delight. The band only has one show coming up which is the Underwater Peoples Showcase in Brooklyn next week, which is sure to be a veritable monsoon of dischord as it features Ducktails, Real Estate and Beach Fossils to name a few. I suggest if you are in the area, you take full advantage of this wonderful show.

Melding staggered sound-scapes and muscular break beats, the duo known as Universal Studios Florida have a firm grasp on the new wave of tropical-influenced music. Add them to the list of bands that are practically un-searchable on the internet; though the simple addition of the bands hometown Seattle (not Orlando), will bring up a multitude of results. Comparable to Ducktails and White Rainbow, Universal Studios Florida have essentially ground up the makings of a Summer day in Texas, seasoned it with synth and the final product is their new record Ocean Sunbirds.
Universal Studios Florida – Frozen Bayou (feat. Alaska)
Universal Studios Florida – Old Spooky and Moss Hut (feat. Big Spider Back)

There’s something about plunging into a crisp swimming pool that makes me feel completely isolated from the masses in my surroundings. The images in my chlorine filled eyes are familiar yet not completely defined, a mash up of chatter (which I’m, most likely, not interested in) is almost completely filtered out through the water, and I’m completely floating in a medium where the normal rules of gravity don’t apply. More themed than most of my mixtapes, these tracks (which also happen to be new/ish) are nearly as muffled as the bros in the pool crowd. And Robin, I gots that jj for ya.
FINALLY: No, this isn’t the podcast, yet, but I’ve included a link to download this weeks mixtape in its entirety. Enjoy!

Real Estate, is led by former Titus Andronicus member Martin Courtney and current Ducktails guitarist Matt Mondanile. Their breezy pop music heard on “Beach Comber,” signals an altogether different vibe from past/present endeavors. The New Jersey based band is now recording a debut LP for Woodsist and based off music available now from Underwater Peoples will be one to look for in the future. I did not hear about these guys from our friends over @pitchfork, (see our June 5th mixtape) but they have an interview up from last week worthy of a read if interested.

Think this is actually our first mixtape in a while that doesn’t have any particular theme attached to it. Strange Boys and Coathangers will be playing at the Lounge on Elm St. tonight, see if you can make it out there. Oh, we’re in the works of setting up our mixtapes for podcasting. Any radio stations out there want to broadcast??

Almighty Defenders – Bow Down and Die
Mayfair Set – Junked!
Cave Weddings – Bring Your Love
Jay Reatard – It Ain’t Gonna Save Me
Jacuzzi Boys – Island Avenue
Handsome Furs – Talking Hotel Arbat Blues
Desire – Under Your Spell
Crystal Fighters – Xtatic Truth (Original)
The Art Museums – Sculpture Gardens
Teenage Cool Kids – Foreign Lands
Ducktails – Parasailing
