christmas island//twenty nine

chrsisl

Conceptual new EP just released by Christmas Island on Captured Tracks.  A-side “Nineteen” then fast-forwards one decade later to “Twenty Nine” on the flip.  Conflicted with upcoming mid-life crisis but still realizing that the first number in yr age is still a “2″, the relation between the lyrics and instrumental are very similar to what we have said about these guys earlier.  So hold tight, there’s still some time before you have to get yr ear pierced and roll skinner in a convertible.

ganglians//blood on the sand

Spooky-pop devotees and Beach Boys doppelgangers Ganglians have recently released their first non-split 7-inch single through Captured Tracks; both the band and the label say it is their best work so far, and I have to conform to that statement myself. With these two tracks the band takes a few steps away from the Wilson cajolery and in their own direction while maintaining the rich harmonies that draw so many comparisons to the legends. Both tracks were recorded by Jarvis of Woods at the Rear House, which makes sense as Woods also have a song named “Blood On The Sand” naturally though, these are completely different tracks. While on the subject of the Sacramento natives Ganglians; they are currently on tour with Wavves as we speak and are coming through the metroplex within the week. There are conflicting sources though, Parade of Flesh the promoter is stating that the show will be at Elm St. Lounge, while on both Wavves and Ganglians myspaces the show is shown to be at the Pastime Lounge. Either way the show is not to be missed, if anyone can clear this up please do.

grass widow

grasswidow

More lovely lo-fi beach jangle served compliments of Grass Widow.  Their eponymous debut long player was released earlier this year via Make A Mess Records.   Props to the ladies as all of their 1st pressing has sold out, ya snooze ya lose.  No worries yall, Grass Widow has made it known that another pressing is on the works.  Moral of the story:   pre-order before they sell out again.  Also, Captured Tracks has a 12″ ep for sale which you should also nab.

Also:  Ryan at Catbirdseat just put up quite a comprehensive insight into the Captured Tracks label.  A must read for any avid fans of their artists.

vivian girls and woods combine

Yet another “supergroup” in the making. Already dropping some heavy news yesterday, Vivian Girls are in the headlines once again. Tentatively named The Babies, the Girls (Cassie Ramone, that is) and Woods performed recently at an afterparty for Woodsist/Captured Tracks festival. The sound quality is typical of a live recording, sub-par, and is a teaser of sorts to keep us all hungry for a proper recording.

spectrals//leave me be

spect
A recent find of mine from Captured Tracks is Leeds’ own Spectrals.  Listed as “faux beach psychedelica”, which seems fitting seeing how the UK isn’t exactly the top destination for all of those Endless Summer bros.  “Leave Me Be” is a misty surf pop tune and very highly recommended (I actually got this track of one of Insounds mixtapes).  Whether is 50’s doo wop (“Don’t Mind”) or more surf-y tunes from “Leave Me Be”, Spectrals’ broad range of musical influences is broadcasted very noticibly throughout his tracks.  Not much listening material out for the time being, but we should expect a 7″ out soon through Captured Tracks.

The Beets//What Did I Do

thebeets

Queens lo-fi rockers play in “dungeons without dragons”, which is exactly where it sounds like they’re tunes were recorded.  Another addition to the Captured Tracks label, these guys fit right it.  The Beets latest album, Spit on the Face of People Who Don’t Want to Be Cool, is more garage pop than garage rock (more of a sunny day with your friends than a sunny day where you want to punch the chump standing next to you).  Their LP can be purchased here on Insound.  Also, Captured Tracks has released nine new 7″ LPs for the month of May, including The Beets Don’t Fit in My Head and another from one of my favs, Blank Dogs Slow Room (formerly known as In Here).
