New lo-fi scuzz from the vein of talent in the heart of Texas. Austin, to be exact. The Zoltars recently sent over a couple of tracks from their upcoming S/T full length and are completely filled with a laid back slacker vibe. No label to call home yet but check out a few live tunes from their favorite haunt, Beerland.

If you were listening to our radio steez last week, you might have heard us play some Soft Healer. Just as relaxing as their influences “essential oils, moonlight, and burnt sage” these laid back tunes have been an inviting way to stay in for the night. Also, they’re from Austin so I’d expect to see them at a number of shows during SXSW.

(big ups to Nate Chan @ Yours Truly for putting this vid together)
What started off as a single day show somehow ballooned into a massive three day “festival” between us and some friends. During the madness that is SXSW, we bring you OUR own party. The collaborative efforts of Yours Truly, Indie-Verse, Transparent, Friendship Bracelet, Sammi Is Booking and the Underwater Peoples have built upon something great. A place where you can grab a beer and listen to some good tunes and get a buzzcut in the parking lot next door after stuffing yr face with Ethiopian sponge bread. For three days (March 18-20, 2010) we bring to you a massive amount of music from/with friends that we have met through starting this site almost a year ago. So from all of us to you…

We were fortunate enough to see Austin-trio Harlem at Funfunfunfest (on the Comedy stage, strangely enough) and personally I thoroughly enjoyed their hungover-pill-poppin’-banter compounded with the monsoon that had only just begun. Their brand of raucous and dissonant garage will spread to the masses through their upcoming April 6th release on Matador titled “Hippies”, the first peek we have of this release is below and is quite a doozy.

Wild Harem has almost completely finished their next full-length and have placed four new songs on their Myspace, one of them you heard here first. But they have nonetheless sent a fifth to us! And we are more than happy to share this fantastic young, hairful band with you. With a guitar lick that could swoon a vestal nun, this new song “Talurah Tom Tom” hits with their distinct full-toned, lazy vocals that literally bounce from the speakers. If you happen to be in the Dallas area, the band is playing at J & J’s in Denton on December 11th. Get some pizza, some Schlitz and some tunes.

My friend Austin (person) who always has my musical ear, sent over a demo from the band Wild Harem out of Austin (the city) which currently has me flabbergasted. The band was formerly known as Some Others and is relatively green in the Austin music scene. I actually happened upon them at a Halloween house show they played with Denton garage greats Uptown Bums and was impressed by the cramped living room performance complete with a dangling chandelier over the lead singers head. Wild Harem has 6 songs up on their myspace but this “Golden Man” demo below is as fresh as Thanksgiving pumpkin pie with a chorus that’s undeniably as delicious; fortunately for you, WTD is the only place you will find it.

Today we at Weekly Tape Deck will be straddling the long road to Austin, TX in search of fun, booze and of course music; all signs lead to Funfunfunfest. FFFfest has become the intermediary between SXSW and the lineup this year proves to be their best so far. You can bet we will be taking plenty of pictures and getting all the info your brains can handle. If you would like to keep up with us in real time the WTD dudes’ twitters are here and here. Furthermore, if you happen to be heading down there, or if you would just like to jam a few bands that are playing– WTD has put together a few songs from some of the artists we will be watching. Enjoy.
Les Savy Fav – Patty Lee
The Strange Boys – This Girls Taught Me a Dance
No Age – Losing Feeling
Harlem – I’m On Drugs
Atlas Sound – Criminals
Times New Viking – Call & Respond
Mika Miko – Bastard In Love
Fuck Buttons – Rough Steez
Crystal Antlers – Owl
GZA – Shadowboxin’ (feat. Method Man)

Corto Maltese performs a cool cover of Television’s “See No Evil” on their Daytrotter session. We wrote about these guys not too long ago here. Really looking forward to seeing these guys live whenever that moment happens.

Anyone in the metroplex area that can make it to Denton Wednesday night will not be sorry. A house show featuring Woven Bones (early weeklytapedeck write up), Uptown Bums, and Bad Sports is happening and will surely be a good time. I will be out with my deteriorating video skills in hopes of bringing our first live performance to the ‘deck. If you do make it out, please bring money for Woven Bones who are making the trip up from Austin. Also a new track from them as of yesterday via RCRDLBL
called “Your Sorcery.” (I couldn’t get their widget to work…apologies)

Another grand discovery hailing from Austin, TX comes Corto Maltese and their driving, catchy songs. Damn it if I don’t feel like I’m copying everything I’ve read about these native Texans, but their sound definitely brings forth reminders of Wolf Parade. (Arcade Fire comparisions begone!) Definitely some straight up jams coming from this Answer, Answer EP which are graciously accepted. They have that undeniable ‘it’ factor going for them and their love for local music almost makes me not want this to escape the state boundaries of Texas. This is fully impossible with inclusions in two film soundtracks, but one can hope right?!? Once again, I hate pigeonholing any band to a certain genre/type here on weeklytapedeck and would rather just let your ears enjoy the title track off the EP.
