shahs//lover’s rock

Tom Helgerson of the somewhat mysterious and reclusive (I mean he lives in Montana) Shahs sent over a new track titled “Lover’s Rock” that will be placed on a yet-to-be-recorded album of the same name. Foremost though he is prepping his newest release Dry Heat/Valley Low for an early 2010 release on Riley Bushman. These songs are hidden gems of mouth-b(r)eat(h)ing that are always screwy and even sometimes nonsensical in the best way possible; hes created almost the antithesis of AnCo in many ways. “Lover’s Rock” picks up where “Pablo Picasso” left off and continues Shahs whispery hip-swaying beats backdropped almost always by organ. Its worth noting that “Lover’s Rock” is also the title of a Sade song as well as the Clash, I guess that kind of goes with “Pablo Picasso” being the title of a Modern Lovers track, in a way. Check out the song below, and for bonus a video of the Tom-himself performing “Handreader” live.

sun airway//oh naoko

You know, there are people who don’t like bands like M83 or AnCo, for those of you that do, you may not want to read any further. Sun Airway (not Sun Araw) takes not-so-subtle influences from each of these bands, but how bad can that be? Not bad at all. Stationed in the cold corner of Phillie, PA the band’s production is notably impressive for a new band and whats more amazing is they offer their most recent output the Oh Naoko EP for free on their website! Radiohead has done the world great. Not sure if you want to download the record blindly? Listen below.

animal tropical//waterbed city

Animal Tropical conveniently holds a description of their music in their name; Animal and Tropical. Tropical should be obvious upon turning on the music; seeing that the band is from Miami probably has something to do with it, there are some Hispanic/Cubano vibes in there. Animal as in Animal Collective, a band which it seems Animal Tropical takes at least a little influence from; in the way that both bands often have multiple personalities through albums. One thing I will tell you: when you listen to their songs listen all the way through as they tend to change course at least once.

phaseone//thanks but no thanks

phaseone

Aside from his umpteen stellar remix gems (Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Banjo or Freakout, etc.) I was made aware of Phaseone’s solo tunes a week or so ago on GvsB.  It’s no secret that he [Phaseone] has his entire album up for grabs, but Matt from Lefse Records just brought to my attention that they have now signed, yet, another great artist.  If all you’ve heard are his remixes, do your self a favor and grab Thanks But No Thanks, sit back, and enjoy.  Still skeptical?  Here’s a couple of tracks to help make up yr mind.  Click here for the album.

Phaseone – Fist Fulla Dollas
Phaseone – Cadence + Athena

weekly mixtape

weekly-tapemix-3-no-overlay

Ahh, what a week!  Aside from the week-o-shows (most of which I was unable to go to), I’ve been getting some great new tunes from random bands I’ve been talking with.   By the way, the Animal Collective show last night was their best performance I’ve seen by far.  I guess the third time’s a charm.  If they are within a 200 mile radius of your barrio, do yourself a huge favor and see them.  Enjoy this week’s mixtape, and your weekend!

The Yolks – I Do What I Do
Liechtenstein – Roses in the Park
The Cave Singers – Beach House
Yo La Tengo – Periodically Double and Triple
Degraders – Memory Curse
Spectrals – Leave Me Be
YACHT – Psychic City
The Mayfair Set – Already Warm
Real Estate – Fake Blues
Animal Collective – Leaf House
Cold Cave – Love Comes Close
Nobunny – Monster Kiss (Golden Boots)

upcoming in june [week 1]

According to my iPhone calendar, June is going to be a busy month for DFW live-music-fans. Nearly every day of June has a dot in its box, each dot representing at least one show that I deem calendar-worthy, which means that I’m going to need a new job and, by July, a new liver. We will keep you updated throughout the month on the live shows that we give our WTD stamp of approval. To kick us off, the first week of June is fucking monumental. Stare in awe below.

6/1 Mr. Lif @ The Loft

up-mrlif3

Ok, so I admit that this isn’t the most impressive show to start the week, but come on, hip-hop shows at The Loft are always a good time. Don’t forget to bring your own blunt. I don’t want to have to share mine with everyone. If you can’t make it, you can always watch Conan’s debut on the Tonight Show where you can also play guess-the-mumbled-lyric with Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. Not hating. By the way, I’ve still got my flannels.

6/2 Passion Pit / Harlem Shakes @ Granada /// 6/2 Japandroids @ The Cavern

passionpit500

Fuck you, scheduling gods. I don’t know who let this happen, but I want to throw peanut m&m’s at their Adam’s apples. I guess you could try to squeeze both shows in, but that seems unlikely. I might have to give the edge to Passion Pit, just because the chances of my getting laid are much higher. [audible boos from the crowd] I know, I know, some people don’t like Passion Pit. (I’m looking at you, Jarvis. Hey, why don’t you just repeat Angela over and over again, that’s a way better song.) But those people suck.

6/3 Black Moth Super Rainbow / School Of Seven Bells @ Hailey’s /// 6/3 New York Dolls @ House Of Blues Dallas

This one is easy, especially if you’re already in Denton, which I’m not. The drive from Dallas should be well worth it, though, for BMSR alone. I hope Tobacco does the Pan’s Labyrinth hand eye thing. That never gets old. If you are stuck in Dallas, pull out the platforms and eyeliner and get your glam on.

6/4 Animal Collective / Black Dice @ House Of Blues Dallas /// 6/4 Au Revoir Simone / The Antlers @ The Cavern

anco

If you don’t already have a ticket to Animal Collective, kill yourself. Or buy one now, because they’re still on sale. Wait, they’re SOLD OUT!! If both of those options fail, you could do a lot worse than the show at The Cavern. On any other night, I’d be there with bells on.

6/5 Mika Miko / Strange Boys @ Rubber Gloves /// 6/5 The Helio Sequence @ The Loft

strangeboys

Once again, if you can make it to Denton, this one’s a no-brainer. If not, you’ll probably be much less likely to get pissed or vomited on at The Helio Sequence. Either way, fun shall be had by all.

6/6 Bonnie “Prince” Billy @ Granada /// 6/6 The Theater Fire @ The Lounge on Elm Street

bpb

I’m a huge Will Oldham fan. I don’t care what name he goes by, I love it all. Dude can even act. Never seen him live. Not sure what to expect. Must go.

6/7 REST

If you survived week one, give yourself a day off. You’ll need your rest for week two.
