[video premiere] angel olsen in logan square

It’s only been a couple of weeks since we were enamored with Angel Olsen and the very personal/beautiful “Creator, Destroyer”.  While in Chicago our good friends at Yours Truly captured her performing two tracks (“Creator, Destroyer” and “If It’s Alive It Will”) with an honesty that couldn’t possibly be emulated.  If you haven’t grabbed it already, Olsen has an amazing tape, Strange Cacti, available on Bathetic.  Highly recommended. The progression of this video is devastating and beautiful, Angel goes from naive and almost nervous to resolute and singing with conviction,  Yours Truly has captured pure gold.

Bathetic have continuously put out new artists on the brink of a musical and artistic divergence. Angel Olsen is their newest treat and Im completely and utterly benumbed by the song they’ve sent us by this bella voce. The song “Creator, Destroyer” is a shattering and tearful ballad hummed along in an almost too intimate embrace. Angel’s voice is nary in a stagnant note–embodying the vocal variety of Joni Mitchell, the morose candor of Françoise Hardy; though not singing but studdering, staggering, an angst-stricken woman stammers through the song until a defiant end. Bathetic is putting this out on as a c24 cassette titled Strange Cactii, I highly recommend picking it up.
