wtd presents: mind spiders//sunnybrook// melting season//land mammals

We were asked to participate in Rubber Gloves’ FREE WEEK right as everyone gets back in the school vibe and to handpick a few bands to showcase at our show September 4th. Mind Spiders are an obvious one–side project of one of local punk legends Marked Men, we’ve already been shoving in your face for awhile now. Sunnybrook and Melting Season are both associates of Denton musical ensemble Sleep Whale–both bands run the gamit of soundscapes, with Sunnybrook’s songs being much more blown-out with thick-set contruction and foggy electronic samples while Melting Season is more instrumental with story-bookish and immersive murals accompanied by jolting soundbytes. Lastly but not least we’ve incorporated the psychedelic-seizing pop of Land Mammals, a band new to my ears whom I caught wind of through their hallucinogenic-house show performances that are seemingly constant in Denton these days. That is what we’re bringing on our side, now I expect all of you reading this to show up and have fun, because after all its FREE. Here is the fbook event page.

Mind Spiders – Dirty Secrets
Sunnybrook – Lobby
Melting Season – The Cliffs
Land Mammals – Poprocks

On Wednesday, August 11th Weekly Tape Deck brings you the raw sounds of the North when Naomi Punk and Masters & Johnson come through Denton to play Dan’s Silverleaf with local consonant-clatterers Sundress. Naomi Punk put out one of our favorite records last year and are clearly geared up for future greatness, don’s miss this you will certainly regret it, and they made it here all the way from Seattle so lets show them a good time. The show is a steal at $5 and will consequently also fall on the night of my birthday so come out and give me a hug and drink to aid my quarter-life crisis. Here is the facebook invite if you’re into that.

Naomi Punk – The Sun
Sundress – Islands

[show] julian lynch//soft healer

Already have plans tonight? Not anymore. Julian Lynch is making his way through the Southwest and has decided to stop in a J&J’s Pizza and melt your face off with his clarinet. The man is a veritable musical genius in the making and his new record Mare was just BNM’d on Pitchfork. If you seen any of this live videos you might have a taste of what kind of a treat we are all in for tonight. The show is $5 and presented by cleverly-named local blog start-ups We Denton Do It and showcases razzle dazzle-psych from Sun Dress and Goldilocks and the Rocks, as well as an Austin band we’ve been lovin’ on for awhile now, Soft Healer. So come on out and drink a Schlitz, grab a slice and get your auditory cortex stimulated.

Julian Lynch – Droplet On A Hot Stone
Soft Healer – Movie Light

[flyer//comp] shake some action!

shakeposter_web_final

So we now complete the “trifecta” having a video, flyer and a sick compilation of some of the bands playing our showcase.  Kudos to Andy from Woven Bones for the flyer and Ian at Friendship Bracelet for putting these comps together (which, by the way, will be handed out physically to the early arrivals).  Not that our party is “RSVP required”, but if you’d like to let us know you’re coming feel free to add your name to the list!  Click the jump for links to download and a complete tracklist.

shake some action//an unofficial sxsw collab

(big ups to Nate Chan @ Yours Truly for putting this vid together)

What started off as a single day show somehow ballooned into a massive three day “festival” between us and some friends.  During the madness that is SXSW, we bring you OUR own party.  The collaborative efforts of Yours Truly, Indie-Verse, Transparent, Friendship Bracelet, Sammi Is Booking and the Underwater Peoples have built upon something great.  A place where you can grab a beer and listen to some good tunes and get a buzzcut in the parking lot next door after stuffing yr face with Ethiopian sponge bread.  For three days (March 18-20, 2010) we bring to you a massive amount of music from/with friends that we have met through starting this site almost a year ago.  So from all of us to you…

@ Karibu Ethiopian Restaurant (1209 East 7th Street//Austin, TX 78702)

[show] darktown strutters//twisted wires

The Weekly Tape Deck dudes will be out and full of fire tonight at the Lounge on Elm St. where Darktown Strutters will be playing host to touring band Twisted Wires. Two bands who very obviously are knowledgeable of their influences; many will point Joy Division, and that is recognized but too easy for a blogger to point out. Darktown Strutters seem to find much inspiration in Warsaw and sometimes even moreso in goth cornerstones Klaus Nomi and Sex Gang Children. Twisted Wires not straying far are more polished and have an almost have a trance appeal and retain a syrupy-Swans beat-fest. The show tonight is only $5 so come out and drink a vodka-whiskey-acid-rum-scotch-on-the-rox with us.

Darktown Strutters – Lucifer Rising
Twisted Wires – Oh Hell
