wtd presents: naomi punk//sundress//masters & johnson

On Wednesday, August 11th Weekly Tape Deck brings you the raw sounds of the North when Naomi Punk and Masters & Johnson come through Denton to play Dan’s Silverleaf with local consonant-clatterers Sundress. Naomi Punk put out one of our favorite records last year and are clearly geared up for future greatness, don’s miss this you will certainly regret it, and they made it here all the way from Seattle so lets show them a good time. The show is a steal at $5 and will consequently also fall on the night of my birthday so come out and give me a hug and drink to aid my quarter-life crisis. Here is the facebook invite if you’re into that.

play pinball! records//denton denton usa! comp//fergus & geronimo

Denton is still in my opinion one of the gems of Texas, though many people will disagree, I think they may hold it to an unreachable standard. Nonetheless the music out of this city is incomparably eclectic and dense with talent. Keeping to this ideal Texas’ own Play Pinball! Records, who you may know for putting out the Fungi Girls LP, have recently released a compilation honoring this city’s musical virtuosity. The comp titled Denton Denton USA! features medley of bands formed in the town; the comp includes cuts from Uptown Bums, Video, Bad Sports, The Secret Bangs, Wax Museums a “secret track” and unreleased tracks from Teenage Cool Kids and Fergus & Geronimo, check out the tracklisting below. You can purchase this vinyl in the limited “Lone Star Blue” or black here and on top of the F&G song below there are five more tracks up at the Play Pinball! myspace. The Fergus & Geronimo track  ”I May Be Poor” is a semi-exclusive track that you’ll only find at WTD or the vinyl of course (well, until Pitchfork gets ahold of it) and features the unique vocal stylings of Jason from F&G rather than Andrew. The track contains one of the stickiest riffs Ive heard in awhile and definitely adheres to the comp’s shibboleth of “the sound of rock and Shiner Bock“.

Fergus & Geronimo – I May Be Poor

Tracklisting:
Teenage Cool Kids – Slave/Master
The Uptown Bums – Throw Your Money Away
The Pumpers – Shut Down
Wiccans – Endgame

The Wax Museums – Billy’s Room
The Influence – Rambunctious Nosferatu
Bad Sports – Your Timin’ Just Ain’t Right
Fergus and Geronimo – I May Be Poor
Fungi Girls – Thanks For Following Love
Video – Bookstore
Bleach Boys – Lazer Jam
The Teenage Bees – I’m So Down

[show] darktown strutters//twisted wires

The Weekly Tape Deck dudes will be out and full of fire tonight at the Lounge on Elm St. where Darktown Strutters will be playing host to touring band Twisted Wires. Two bands who very obviously are knowledgeable of their influences; many will point Joy Division, and that is recognized but too easy for a blogger to point out. Darktown Strutters seem to find much inspiration in Warsaw and sometimes even moreso in goth cornerstones Klaus Nomi and Sex Gang Children. Twisted Wires not straying far are more polished and have an almost have a trance appeal and retain a syrupy-Swans beat-fest. The show tonight is only $5 so come out and drink a vodka-whiskey-acid-rum-scotch-on-the-rox with us.

Twisted Wires – Oh Hell

video//bookstore

video

Complete disregard for “safe” listening levels and a stage presence worthy of starting riots, we are more than pleased to have VIDEO on the bill for the upcoming show at RGRS in Denton on Nov. 9th.  Harpal just sent over 2 tracks, “Bookstore” being new and set to feature on Play Pinball RecordsDenton Denton USA compilation.  These should get you set for the date.  Oh, Crystal Antlers and The Uptown Bums are also gonna be there?  Yeah, arrive early and stay late.

VIDEO – Bookstore
VIDEO – Teenage Death

the horrors @ the granada 9/25

horrors

Next Friday at the Granada Theater (9/25), The Horrors will be on stage bringing some love in the form of extremely loud shoegaze tunes.  Judging by their pictures, they are very engaging with the crowd.  I mean the guy has no trouble singing from the chicken fight position.  Expect some other favs of ours, Crocodiles, to set the stage as openers along with the DFW natives, Burning Hotels.  Nate the Great from Granada has given us two pairs of tickets to give away to our readers!  Send emails to weeklytapedecktix@gmail.com and tell us yr favorite flavor of ice cream to win.  If you don’t win, make sure to buy your tickets from the Granada because they are oh-so-cool about not ravaging you with outrageous convenience fees.

fergus & geronimo //powerful lovin’

The output of quality music, so far, by the band Fergus & Geronimo really cannot compare to their counterparts. In my humble opinion, the band is at the forefront of a burgeoning new branch of music; I think its the soul vibes that do it for me. By my count they are already pre-ordering one new 7 inch on Transparent and have released two more thus far, on Woodsist *sold out* and the most recent on Tic Tac Totally!, the latter of the two I actually ordered for myself recently. The band is listed as a “casual project” as of now, and no shows are up on the band’s Myspace but I am willing to bet they will have a show soon; maybe a free show this Friday, Sept. 4th at our friends’ Rubber Gloves with Sleep Whale and Dust Congress, you can never know for sure though.

sunnybrook//willow whale

sunny

Yet another great local artist to sign to one of our favorite record labels.  Paul North’s project, Sunnybrook, has just recently joined forces with the great entourage of artists at Lefse.  Hints were already being dropped when one of his tunes was featured in their stellar compilation.  Sit tight and hang loose with the breezy “Willow Whale”, which will be included on their album set for release sometime early next year.

bosque brown//my gold mask//this old house

RGRSOct10at400w

Weekly Tape Deck is very proud to announce our first showcase, brace yourself because its a doozy. The show will take place October 10th at everyone’s favorite Denton, Texas venue: Rubber Gloves. The show will be headlined by the beautifully talented Bosque Brown, whose album Baby has been lovin’ on my speakers since it was released in March of this year. Bosque Brown is a pseudonym for the soulful Mara Lee Miller whose élan vital is her hauntingly beautiful voice; perhaps best described as one Flannery O’ Connor crooning Cat Power songs.  We are also very lucky to have the talents of My Gold Mask playing the show, as they will be on tour burning up the Midwest as the dog days of Summer take a backseat for the one-dog nights of fall. The MGM duo of Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo have been on WTD’s radar for a bit and we are elated to see them live; you should be as well. Local act This Old House rounds up our first showcase, this band is part of the every-growing music scene in Denton and paints palette’s of hazy skies with their brand of what sounds to be minimalist Robin Guthrie-inspired pop songs with a dash of Americana for some sweetness. So there you have it folks, our very first showcase….you say you’re not convinced yet? Well take a listen to the tracks below and that might change your tone.

Bosque Brown – So Loud
My Gold Mask – Monomania
This Old House – At Risk

Some of you skeptics still aren’t convinced? Well watch this.

tim delaughter//apart

tim dl

Tim DeLaughter’s blog, The Fragile Army, has released another demo from his recordings in the West Village.  Just recently nominated for an Emmy for the title tune to The United States of Tara, this will be his third new release in the past week.  “Apart”, is Tim’s new exploration of GarageBand and he is “just getting it down”.  Didn’t take him too long to get with the program.  This is more of the minimal, downtempo wholesomeness displayed in the previous (recent) tunes.   Also, Mr. DeLaughter notes a theme that should become more apparent as he continues to release these demos.  One that is “VERY important for me(Tim) to express”.  Make sure to grab the other demos while visiting his site.
