The Tearist sent over a video they directed for weirdo-pop ‘super-group’ Gremlins. Consisting of Coma Cinema‘s Mat Cochran, Sam Ray of Ricky Eats Acid, Katie Lee of Braids and Toro Y Moi‘s Patrick Jeffords, Gremlins brings four musical brains into one peculiar pop project. Check out the video for “JonBénet” and the lead-off song “Maim My Bitch” from their EP below.

Justin Vallesteros’ song-writing seems to have matured since his last release, with his new song “Still Left With Me” moves forward while remaining true to his impassioned synth project Craft Spells. Check out the new track below from his upcoming Gallery EP.

Some cool space-rock for your head space. Brisbane-based trio Martyr Privates play heavy psychedelic à la The Telescopes and The Warlocks. Uncomplicated and doomful, the band hits every lick and cymbal with a admirable intensity. They have a new 7-inch out on Bon Voyage that you can purchase here.

About a month ago Bob from Cloudy Busey/Ice Cream Shout sent over a new song and video, I initially dismissed it for it’s different sound. It’s no secret that I’ve been behind this man and his music for the last 2 years. The music the words and the images he puts them to are consistently intriguing and even by e-mail Bob is a mysterious fellow. It took me the full month to actually appreciate this song, it’s different from the past work but still holds his signature wispy, charming vocals. I’ll continue to appreciate this faceless Japanese artist as long as he continues to send me music. Here are his directions for the video:
I shot this video with my cell phone when i was drunk. It is, perhaps obviously, related to my last video.
It’s DJ friendly and a bit quiet storm. If you’re feeling impatient don’t bother. Come back after you’ve relaxed a bit and put some decent whiskey into your bloodstream. Turn out the lights and go fullscreen with some nice headphones on.

Remember a few year ago when Death popped up out of no-where, re-mapping everyone’s musical knowledge of punk? Well it seems someone has finally taken that next step. The information on Algiers is meager–it’s a three man effort and the soundcloud descriptions on of each of these songs are busting with adjectives and allusions. The music itself is a loaded gun of heritage and sub-genres. I like the ideas on the a-side of the “Blood” 7-inch but I prefer this song. To be released on Double Phantom.

If I can’t go to heaven let me go to LA
Or the far West Texas desert or an Oregon summer day
If we build a Utopia will you come and stay?
Shangri-La La La La La La La La La…
How perfect. Love the direction this band has gone.

The Sufis might have well found the secret to time travel and it might just be peyote. They’ve posted their entire new LP on soundcloud, and boast playing all sorts of weirdly-named instruments in the recording. I dig it. It’s a cleanly recorded jam-fest and soothing to the touch. It might be playing in that moment when you finally meet with Anton Newcombe and Jim Morrison on the plane of existence.

The dreary-pop of 90s era Flying Nun carries over into the now with Australian band Bad Dreems. How could a band from a sunny, tropical area be so down-trodden and destitute? Who cares, all I know is what I hear and I hear goodness. Listen to “Chills” below.

Taking a down a notch, a layered, tropical offering from Marshall Trotter. “Jump” plays like a Disney® intern on mescaline had the studio to himself for a few hours. Layered vocals and whistling befitting a tweetling angel or at the very least a hungover ’60s Sunday morning chorus. As beautiful as this sounds I can’t help but keep looking behind me expecting a cloven-footed imp to be dancing with folly and a fistful of Olde English 800. This tape will be coming out on Mirror Universe in the near future.

Trying to get back on my blog game since moving to Los Angeles, bands like Corners make it easy. With only three tags listed on their bandcamp: california, surf, Los Angeles. Oh soothing simplicity–you already know this is good. The band has gathered an array of beautiful sounds like a collection of dusty artifacts scattered in a cigar box: dense, dismal guitar tones and a utterly ominous rattling paired with gravely but boyish vocals. On top of this, the drummer absolutely clobbers the cymbals like a mad man. LA Weekly may need to amend a certain list soon (immediately).
