Things were different this year, there is no clear cut “best record” as there have been in the past. Instead, this year a handful of records blew me away. Ranging from a collection of beats that somehow sounded better free of the vocals to an Austin trio hell-bent on reverb-ing your brain out of its capsule. Without trying, I somehow ended up with exactly 20 albums, check it out below.

This was the bonus track on the Hymn release Tonstartssbandht put out earlier in the year. I was way behind on this but thought this video a good reason to rehash on this unique duo. Check out the original version below.

Pleasantly minimal video from Cough Cool‘s next release Lately out on Bathetic. Ghoulish, haunting vocals and woolly distortion make me wish this record came out earlier in the year to contend for our upcoming favorites list.

Great slacker anthem from FIDLAR turned into a nonsensical video where the Grim Reaper and soldiers surf the sands. Out in 7-inch form now.

X-mas jam from Dead Gaze for your drowsed holiday mood. I’ve added Dent May’s holiday track from last year if you want something more upbeat, it seemed appropriate as both of these guys hail from the Cats Purring clan.

Andrew G. Thompson is the mind behind AyGeeTee, his new record Is IT SAFE? is teeming with ambient-funk noise and ranges from mellow, horn-driven jazz pieces like “CHOOSE LIFE, WIFE” to savory synth movements in “Ssantos Muertos”. Is IT SAFE is out on Amdiscs, listen to the full album below and check out the 90s dance montage for “LOVEBURN xtra”.
