A Cobain in the news, a young Washington band howling and riffing like discontented ghosts of grunge–is it really 2011? Naomi Punk blast rapturous riffs in their newest song “The Spell,” riffs that surely resonate with the 90s and a sound immediately recognizable to the millenial generations’s keen ‘sixth sense of nostalgia’. Fortunately the Olympia, WA band pays influences with grace and innovation, bellowing and squalling their voices creating something that is both jarring and serene. In the email Naomi Punk sent to me containing their new song they mentioned that they are knowingly “off the internet grid (living in olympia, washington)” while this may be true what they may not know is that good, pure music knows no grids or State boundaries.
Naomi Punk are currently recording a full length and are touring the Western US in September.
