Tucker Rountree can shred. Though you may not know from watching him lead a Total Slacker show, or even listening to a song, but the lanky Brooklyn golden-hair has even played with renowned guitarist Eric Johnson. Much like a technically proficient painter chooses to paint with abstraction rather than landscapes, Rountree chooses the jangly, pop-infused chords rather than hammer-ons and scales for Total Slacker. These ideals intact, the slow-drip Total Slacker creates easy-going pop melodies akin to Bowie/Ronson-produced Transformer and though the band early on had roots in lo-fi, its seems they’ve ditched that for a glossier production on their upcoming release THRASHIN. Album-opener”Psychic Mesa” seethes with crunchy guitar and words of an eerie combine of hippies, farmers, and other stranger characters all living amongst each other and gaining magic powers from living on an alien crash/burial site. There is abstraction for you.
THRASHIN will be released on September 26th via Marshall Teller Records.

Caught in the Summer blues? Sitting inside like a sad sack with your hand in a potato chip bag? Get your ass out side and blast the new collection of Monster Rally songs. These are essentially b-sides to 2010′s Palm Reader EP and effortlessly capture the trance of Summer dance and romance.

One of the cooler things to happen in the Dallas area for some time, our comrades at Gorilla vs. Bear have put together their very own one-off festival show aptly titled Gorilla vs. Bear Fest. Some may bemoan the lack of local talent–I’m not exactly sure why this is the issue, if you only support local bands, those are the only bands you’re ever going to see play. However there are six Texas bands playing this fest including: one legendary Dallas performer, three heart-achingly beautiful Austin outfits, one shredding, Beef-hearty Austin quartet and one group of accordion-equipped Denton sweethearts. Beyond that one of the most authentic MCs in the land will be there, an adorable Canadian songstress and last but not least some glacial vocals from a Brooklyn based singer. If you are in the metropolitan area, I ask you to attend this most stacked show–its an important step in the right direction for Dallas Proper’s music scene. And if you collect all the free music GvB has shown us over the past 6 years, it is certainly worth the money.

Also through AMDISCS is the new Honeydrum EP, Pleasures of the Sun. An insanely prolific band, Honeydrum, has put out at least four releases in the past year that I can count. This one is up for complete download below or you can purchase the cassette through AMDISCS here. After the break, check out two videos for notable tracks “Skin City” and the Stevie Moore-ish, Pink-ish “Cruise Control”.

Collaborative effort from two artists: The Present Moment is an AMDISCS band of the coldwave variety and the other, Mascara, seems to be a bit of a ghost. Together they created this molten track that essentially is a 90s dance beat with goth vocals. You wouldn’t think taking one-part Sisters of Mercy and one-part Real McCoy would amount to much.
