[premiere] moss of aura//titan

Moss of Aura, Future Islands, Friends Records, Baltimore

With Moss of Aura, you get what you hear: your favorite instrumental dub band is soundtracking an ’80s B movie while the cast of Miami Vice dances around them banging on steel drums. Every track I’ve heard thus far from this band is either a party or driving music for the trip to the party. The synth-ace of the project is Garitt Welmers of Future Islands fame, and if you’ve heard both bands the connection is patently obvious. With the upcoming release of Wading, Moss of Aura will expand on the lush sound first widely displayed on last year’s Still Parade, but this time the sounds will be pressed to wax thanks to fellow Baltimoreans Friends Records. The label will also release the work on Moss of Aura’s five previous CD-R’s (including Still Parade) on cassette, complimenting and leading up the LP release.

New band from Jennifer and Jessica Clavin of MIKA MIKO. I’m a sucker for close harmony singing.

dent may//fun

Dent May, Brian Wilson, Paw Tracks

Dent May might be the closest thing we’ll ever have to a coherent Brian Wilson solo career. Don’t let that pigeonhole the well-traveled Mississippi man’s particular sound, but serve as a compliment to the craftsmanship of the crooner’s silvery creations. “Fun” plays like a 1990s Saturday morning in that its easy going and yet completely off-kilter–note the solo in the middle of the song.  This will be his 2nd single in the past year, the first one threw yours truly and this one will wear the Paw Tracks insignia.

cloudy busey//broken by intertia

cloudy busey, ice cream shout, osaka, japan

I may or may not be the first to post this, either way I was so stoked about the email I received from Bob of Cloudy Busey (from the band Ice Cream Shout) I jumped out of my sick-bed in a fit of excitement. Both of the past songs sent to me from Bob’s projects ended up being my favorite songs of 2010 (which we never posted). This song, which includes their first original video, takes a beat driven side as opposed to the light and airiness of the past two. Its the singers propensity to match his melodic drawl up with the song that really draws me to these bands’ songs, you can almost see him hardly cracking his mouth open to record the song, but it works. Check out the video after the jump.

kiwi sisters//…for the young and fertile bearers of fruit…

Leave it up to me to completely miss a great band from my area. Kiwi Sisters are a mysterious two-piece outfit out of Dallas, TX that looks to be the collaborative brainchild of Caleb Flores-Gutierrez. Their newest release is dramatically titled …For The Young And Fertile Bearers Of Fruit… but the spectacle lies in the music not the title. Broad, sweeping and nary stuck in a single sound, Kiwi Sisters‘ songs are a twisted amalgamation of influences, some tracks feel like they were born in a retro-futurist 70s Brussels while others make me think of a sweat-laden Stephin Merritt on uppers grasping the microphone at a back-alley discotheque. For now you can stream the entire album and in July AMDISCS will be releasing this on tape.

[fresh] how to dress well//just once

How To Dress Well, HTDW, R&B, Soul, YoursTruly

Yours Truly offshoot Love Letters Ink sure is off to a hot start. Their 2nd release will be an EP with blue-eyed soulman How To Dress Well, but not just any EP, these 4 songs are orchestral re-workings of tracks from his noisy Love Remains LP–the man himself explains the inspiration for this EP in the video below. The release will be in the 10″ vinyl format and if that’s not enough, YT piles on a few more incentives for purchasing this release.

Limited to 1000 copies, this 10″ vinyl is a one-time-only orchestral release from HTDW. Each physical copy comes with a hand-written letter from HTDW and a password to view behind-the-scenes footage of the “Suicide Dream 2″ recording. $1 of every 10″ sold will be donated to MindFreedom.org to benefit those with Mental Health Issues.

Way to spread the love, dudes.

[fresh] night manager//pizza pasta

New York’s Night Manager rip through some serious melancholic riffs in their new track “Pizza Pasta,” intermingling the enchanting voice of Brooklyn siren Caitlin Seager. Arranged with dubby guitar, warped bass, and a trashcan backline, her voice never seems to stay put and has easily become one of the band’s hallmarks, teetering up and down in wanton abandon. Pre-order their 3-song Pizza Pasta 7″ from Fire Talk.
