[fresh] light asylum//dark allies

If you haven’t already heard this, check out Light Asylum’s androgynous 80′s beat-blaster. Like punchier Eurythmics with more soul.

earth girl helen brown//hit after hit

Coming from a rather extreme personal past history, Earth Girl Helen Brown’s debut EP (Story of an Earth Girl) channels her upbringing into a mix of 60s pop and folk psychedelia.  A product of Sonny Smith’s ultra ambitious 100 Records Project, EGHB features a slew of fellow San Fransiscans.  Including (but not limited to) Heidi Alexander and Grace Cooper of the Sandwitches, John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees and (of course) Sonny Smith of Sonny and the Sunsets.  Now added to the Forest Family roster, this EP will be birthed on solid white 10″ vinyl on March 1st.  Limited to 500, pre-order.

[premiere] mind spiders//don’t let her go

By now you’ve probably noticed our affinity for Mind Spiders and their powerful guitar-driven pop quick hitters.  “Don’t Let Her Go” is just as charmingly brash and bottles a fist full of raw energy in to just under 2 minutes.  Their debut, self-titled, LP is now available from Dirtnap Records on blue vinyl (first 200).  Get it.

[co-premiere] woodsman//time lapse

Forged in the wake of their upcoming Rare Forms LP (out January 25th on Lefse), “Time Lapse” is yet another one of Woodsman‘s expansive Kraut tinted sound collages.  Riddled with subdued synth notes and a near breathless, distant vocal tracking, every moving part is organically unified into 4 minutes and 45 seconds of psychedelic humidity.  Featuring Brian Marcus  (of Tjutjuna and Samurai Buck fame) this track is offered as the b-side on their newly released “Insects” 7″ single.  Available through the band’s own Fire Talk Records on clear green vinyl.  Limited to 300.

minks//kusmi

Fader premiered this track today by MINKS from their new LP By The Hedge on Captured Tracks (always on a roll aren’t they?). “Kusmi” is a pithy 2-minute track with a sweetie-pie quality to it, I hope they’re looking into eachothers eyes when they sing this. And yet another band passes through that was in our Most Anticipated list.
