mean jeans//born on a saturday night

Upon listening to the first note of  the Mean Jeans record Are You Serious? I knew I loved it. Its nothing new of course, but when a band captures the pre-power pop/proto-punk/post-mod sound perfectly, it just drags me in regardless.  Mean Jeans do this wonderfully, and its not like there havent been thousands of bands that have tried this and failed (to me) but sometimes it just clicks and this is one case. Ill leave it at that, just listen to these songs and enjoy.

[video] jonny telafone//stardate 2012.1221

Ive had my eye on Aussies distributors of all that is good, Dream Damage records, for awhile, they keep me up to date on the lo-fi/kraut/garage/drone coming out of the other side of the world. Here is a good example from Jonny Telafone with “Stardate 2012.1221″.

ty segall//hey big mouth [in a cloud comp]

Secret Seven Records is prepped to a release a new compilation on the eve March that encompasses the vast range of sound coming out of the San Francisco area. The compilation titled In A Cloud: New Sounds From San Francisco and includes new tracks from Thee Oh Sees, The Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall, Tim Cohen, Sonny & The Sunsets, The Sandwitches, Hannah & Raven (of Grass Widow) and tons more. Im stoked about hearing anything new from Ty Segall so I present this to you via the wonderful Secret Seven Records; “Hey Big Mouth” is the song and its a roarin’ raucous punk tribute, hard hitting and as snotty as the Dead Boys. You can pre-order the LP here.

total slacker//hangin’ tough

album-hangin-tough

Equally as cool as Marky Mark Donnie and the other Kid’z version, Total Slacker just covered  the classic “Hangin’ Tough” (how about that Home Boy shirt?) at one of their live shows recently.  Jokingly/Seriously recording a studio dub for yr home stereo, so feel free to break out in some sweet dance moves.

pill wonder//jungle/surf

pdubz

Easily one of the “Most Rad Cassette Release of 2k9″, Pill Wonder’s Jungle/Surf was released cassette-style via the (great) Wild Animal Kingdom.  Now, thanks to Underwater Peoples, yr analog PW collection can be completed as they are releasing this gem on 12″ vinyl (only UP’s 2nd LP release).  Rather than tell you how “jungle-y” or “surf-y” this sounds, I’ll leave things to cleverly crafty wordsmith Sawyer Carter Jacobs…. (Pre-Order)

dum dum girls//d.a.l.

Stereogum premiered a new rock-a-bye-ing track from the Dum Dum Girls this morning, D.A.L. is actually off the previous extended-play they released on Zoo Music, but will accompany the new full-length if you pre-order through Sub Pop. The track is an emotionally static, it starts low and it stays low. We can only hope that the Dum Dum Girls haven’t opted out of their lo-fidelity recording niche, I think it captures the vocals perfectly. Do you agree/disagree?

bake sale//prom song

bakesale

At my prom, the ladies were getting freak nasty to Cisqo’s “Thong Song” when they should have been slow dancing to this beautiful serenade from Bake Sale.  Where has our innocence gone?  But seriously, “Prom Song” punches through with that unforgettable Spector/Ronettes drum line and jumps right into “make-out mode” about a minute in.  For now, all I’ve noticed are a few local shows in their home town of Memphis but stay tuned for future release info.

cloud nothings//little raygun

cloudcamp

Limited to 100 copies, Bathetic Records is releasing a c22 split with the likes of–2 dudes we’ve been digging–Cloud Nothings and Campfires.  Fast paced and blown out, tunes like “Little Raygun” are the epitome of why I’ve been digging on these guys.  Head to the Bathetic site to listen to another CN jam along with one from Campfires.  Oh, and don’t forget to purchase this gem while your’re there.
