Not that this is all too relevant to the DFW (they won’t be within 500 miles of Texas), but if you’ve got tons of money and can buy a plane ticket I think you might just have shit your pants. The Vaselines, you probably heard Kurt Cobain talk about them a time or two, are embarking on their 2nd tour of the U.S. Sub-Pop just released delux edition 3xLP Enter the Vaselines, a collection of hits/rarities/b-sides and (if you’ve got a few hours to sit down and jam some tunes) is nothing short of a masterpiece. Here’s a couple of tracks to enjoy, as well as the tour dates that I probably won’t get to visit.
The Vaselines
May 10 El Rey Theater (LA), Los Angeles, CA
May 11 Bimbos, San Francisco, CA
May 12 Neumos, Seattle, WA
May 13 Doug Fir Lounge, Portland, OR
May 15 Lee’s Palace, Toronto, Canada
May 16 Metro, Chicago, IL
May 17 Bowery Ballroom, The, New York City, NY
May 28 Primavera Sound Festival, Barcelona, Spain

Joey Casio is a one man freak show of dance. An integral part to the K Records rolodex of artists, his nasaly voice crooning over house loops is quite difficult to mistake. His most recently released 7″ split ep Share the Cup is an anthemic tune, “Share the Cup,” along with a remix of the same song by Selector Dub Narcotic. The recording is raw as shit, but one of my favorite pieces of his work. The album cover offers the key lyrics to the track and tells us, “hey! quit being such a dick!”. Tracks are available via iTunes or at the K Records store.

Some great new tunes out of Austin, TX from Some Say Leland. The full length album from Dan Grissom and crew features a plethora of instruments (11 band members!) to tell their folk tales of sadness. Doses of Okerrvil River mixed with jazzy, Americana roots music await. The music seems so anachronistic to our time that a single listen sprouts memories of yesteryear. Fifty Miles into the Main was printed with a “limited first edition of 400 that are in handmade packaging featuring silkscreen printing and small handmade lyric booklets. The packaging was printed and assembled by Dan Grissom and Kyley Cantwell, which would make a great addition to any collection if there are any left. Very beautiful music indeed. Patience is required with this album, no instant gratification here.

Radio comes on: Faust?! Yeah, if Faust had snorted an eight ball and shotgunned a six pack of Red Bull. Higamos Hogamos debut LP (s/t) was released almost a month ago on DC Recordings, and, once again, I’m behind the curve. Dosen’t matter, a tune this good, I’m just happy to have found it. Their album is so conflicted, ranging from the depths of Kraut to funky disco break beats. Not much to be said in thier vocals, but try not to get lost in the instrumental madness. “Major Blitzkreig”, one of my favs on the album, is a warzone of drums and synths that will have you pressing the repeat button for days. Check out the tunes and then buy their gear.

I’ve been digging on Passion Pit since their debut ep, Chunk of Change, dropped last September. Their newest release to be, Manners, has been drawing tons of hype and is now blog/buzzworthy. They have since dropped some great singles and probably one of my favorite videos of the year (so far…). Check out one of their new single’s, “Moth’s Wings”. Also, Pasta Primavera has some new tunes available. Manners is set to release May 18th via Frenchkiss Records.

New single from West Coast punkers Mika Miko, “I Got A Lot (New New New)”. Just your typical MM jam that smacks you in the face with rapid drum attacks and linear chord progressions. Mika Miko’s new album We Be Xuxa, will be be available for purchase May 5 on PPM Records.

The tunes from Australian Angus Stone’s Lady of the Sunshine offer up some of the normal themes of a solo album: revenge, suicide, and love. The package these themes are delivered in sets it apart from anything I’ve heard lately though. Gentle, melancholic songs mesh with hard, bluesy stoner rock. It’s hard to put a label on Smoking Gun as an album either way though. It would be a disservice to categorize it at all, except that upon a listening you know it is good. Really good. If I had to pick a slightly similar artist I might say Black Keys with softer songs mixed in. Toting a guitar sound that has been sorely missed with his unique voice, this is undoubtedly rock at its core. This is not to say there aren’t moments of cliche involved, but overall a worthy listen. I’ll let you, the listener, decide what you think with a full album preview. Out now.

New track from Portland folk/shoegazers (can the two of these even be mentioned in the same sentence?) Viva Voce. If you like this tune, they will be releasing a set of singles via EMusic sometime tomorrow. This album is heavily recommended and soon to appear on our list of “constant rewinds”. “Devotion”’s fuzzed out rock patterns bring to mind 90’s act Swervedriver and can be found HERE or downloaded on their official website. Rose City will be available May 26th on Barsuk Records. Heavily Recommended!

Elsewhere in Portland:

Another “rock super group” in the making. Including Danny Seim (Menomena), Dave Allen (Gang of Four), and John Askew (Tracker) we have Faux Hoax/myspace (pronounced “Folks”). Their EP, Your Friends Will Carry You Home, is available for preorder through Polyvinyl (shipping on May 8th) and is limited to 1000 copies. Their tunes can be heard on Muxtape. By the way, I’ve spent hours on the Muxtape site, tons of great remixes to check out.

After a sidetrack on our way to this show ending up at the wrong Lola’s (the band did the same we were told), we made it to the venue just in time to see what none of us expected. Yes, we knew Thao w/ the Get Down Stay Down were good…but damn that was a great show. A small crowd got to witness a band that brings everything they have for their fans. There is something about putting on a show when it is too damn hot and nasty where someone might pass out that elevates it to another level. This was one of those shows. Fighting through the heat armed with plenty of drinks Thao, Willis, and Adam gave everyone beyond what they paid for with plenty of groovy songs and new tunes. The band fed off the crowd’s energy even prompting a small diss of Austin’s crowd the previous night. I wish more bands wouldn’t neglect the west side of the metroplex as there are plenty of great venues there as well. Can’t wait until the next time they come through! More pics below from NicV!!
